2015-2016 SWCSEF Grant Recipient
Thank you for the funds to purchase bouncing ball chairs for our kindergarten class. At the beginning of each class, students were given an opportunity to bounce on the chairs for one minute before instruction, allowing them to release extra energy and get each class started with something fun.
Students who struggled with hyperactivity were given bouncing breaks in the middle of instruction which helped them increase their focus. The chairs were perceived as “cool and fun” and students enjoyed sitting on them. Students from other classrooms often asked if they could come and sit on the “cool” chairs. They became so popular that they were used as a whole class incentive during the school year.

Meet the Intermediate School Ukulele Club! Students met weekly to learn all about the uke and how to play. By the end of our time together, students were strumming and singing along to "Stitches" by Shawn Mendes. We had a blast!

2015-2016 SWCSEF Grant - From Kindergartener to Scientist: Exploring the Life Cycles of Ducks.
Students observed the life cycle of ducklings from egg to duckling, parts of a duck, and how to take care of them. Each of the five kindergarten classrooms received a different type of duckling. This consisted of Mallards, Cayuga, Swedish, Khaki Campbell, and Buff.
Students were able to experience the hatching, and the transition out of the incubator. Once they were dry enough the students held the ducklings and watched them take their first swim.
The excitement throughout the school was awesome and the kindergartners couldn’t stop talking about their new friends.
Students participated in interactive writing with 4th grade students, sharing knowledge about ducks and wrote informational reports about ducks.
Ducklings stayed in the classroom for about a week and were then sent them to their forever homes. It has been about three weeks and students still ask about their friends and enjoy sharing their learning with anyone new in the building. It was an experience of a lifetime.

2015-2016 SWCSEF Educational Grant Recipient!
The grant is for the Lego Mindstorm EV3 program. This program is geared for students in middle school and is designed to help students with problem solving and critical thinking skills. The grant is being used to purchase two robots with the software needed to program them. The goal is to eventually take students to competitions with the robots, but initially students will learn how to build and program the robots.

Thank you to everyone who attended the annual South-Western City Schools Educational Foundation Dinner & Auction.
Your contribution directly supports scholarships to graduating SWCS seniors and grants to teachers and schools throughout the district.
